Italian ISPs sue government for gambling prohibition

Italian Internet service providers (ISPs) have brought a lawsuit against the government’s new regulations with regards to online gambling, as they would affect services provided to some Internet gaming sites.

As a consequence of this “censorship case”, at first the providers carried out the new regulations, modifying their services in order to avoid that Italians could access prohibited sites. However, ISPs are now raising their voices, as they consider that this law is an act of violence against their companies and their clients’ liberty of action.

Assoprovider, the association representing almost 200 ISPs, appealed to TAR (the Regional Administrative Court). This is the first legal action started by the providers in order to defend their clients’ right and their own to operate and access services through Internet.
