Australian casinos are pressing the federal government to reach an agreement and be exonerated from the “Know your Clients” bill. The bill has been proposed by the government to fight money laundry and terrorism. The bill says that all Australian financial institutions and casinos must check all their clients’ background.
However, Chris Downy, CEO for Australian Casino Association, plans to argue the bill. According to Downy, casinos should be treated differently; he says that it is not viable to check every casino client, besides, casino costumers go to casinos to place bets and have fun, they go for the entertainment, not because they have a hidden agenda.
Chris Ellison, Justice and Costume Minister, said that the government has taken into consideration the industries concerns about the monetary cost of checking every single client background. Downy also says the casino clients bind to terrorism are almost non-existent, so he wants to put casinos in the low risk category.
